Wow. I had such an interesting, emotional sweet morning watching my son Jaleb up on stage singing Let it Go from the movie Frozen. It was so adorable.... and also so amazingly symbolic of a lot of what we were discussing at the Sister Circle last night! The synchronicity in life continually amazes me! Queen Elsa sings this song after she is ostracized and flees her kingdom of Arendelle, soon after her ice powers or perceived dark side are discovered by the public. Realizing that she can no longer hide her powerful abilities anymore, Elsa declares herself free from the stress and fears that shes been faced with since childhood. The lyrics Conceal, dont feel, dont let them know, were a phrase Elsas father told her (the unhealthy masculine) when she was given her gloves for safety, and Elsa sings Conceal, dont feel, dont let them know, well now they know! and finally letting go of her Queendom Let it go!, withdrawing completely. After finishing creating her palace and a new outfit she wore made of ice (unhealthy masculine made manifest in the ICE QUEEN), Elsa ends the song with The cold never bothered me anyway. Very representative of how and why we develop masks, guardians and withdraw, building big walls of protection around ourselves. The Ice Queen archetype - our unhealthy feminine at her best! Can seem empowered, but look deeper. Here are the words: The snow glows white on the mountain tonight Not a footprint to be seen A kingdom of isolation, and it looks like Im the Queen The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside Couldnt keep it in, Heaven knows I tried Dont let them in, dont let them see Be the good girl you always have to be Conceal, dont feel, dont let them know Well, now they know! Let it go! Let it go! Cant hold it back anymore! Let it go! Let it go! Turn away and slam the door! I dont care what theyre going to say Let the storm rage on The cold never bothered me anyway Its funny how some distance makes everything seem small And the fears that once controlled me cant get to me at all! Its time to see what I can do To test the limits and break through No right, no wrong, no rules for me Im free! Let it go! Let it go! I am one with the wind and sky Let it go! Let it go! Youll never see me cry Here I stand, and here I stay Let the storm rage on My power flurries through the air into the ground My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast Im never going back, the past is in the past! Let it go! Let it go! And Ill rise like the break of dawn Let it go! Let it go! That perfect girl is gone! Here I stand in the light of day... Let the storm rage on!!! The cold never bothered me anyway Whilst in some ways, this song is a reclamation of her freedom and empowerment, freeing herself from holding back her powers there is also tragedy, anger, bitterness, and self-deception in it, in even greater measure. By the end of the song, she is in severe danger of losing herself. The song does lift her up, but only to set her perched atop a high precipice, totally isolated and removed. In Elsas next scene (I have watched frozen several times with my kids - highly recommend it if you havent seen it already), she sings Oh, Im such a fool, I cant be free / No escape from this storm inside of me, driving her further toward despair. So she takes back what she had said, in her very next scene. She is, in fact, not yet free and is not fine with the storm raging on inside her. The line Let the storm rage on is followed by The cold never bothered me anyway Uncontrolled release of her powers still remains the primary problem in the story, and after building her ice palace she is never again happy while using her powers, until the end of the movie. Most importantly, cold as in isolation from other people, is still bothering her to the core. Think about what she does after she finishes her song, right after she sings that last line the cold never bothered me anyway: she turns around and slams shut the doors to her new castle, as she had done in Arendelle. Her way of dealing with her problem is still the same as it was before: she thinks as long as she shuts people out - as long as shes far enough away and isolated and alone - shell be okay. Needless to say, after school today, I talked to Jaleb about the words of the song and what it means to be truly free. To face what we feel and stand true to who we are without running away from our queendom and those we love. Could not believe how significant my morning was and then my two Skype sessions today were both centred around this theme of finding empowerment by running away. The ego of course, had convinced both of my clients that it would be liberating or empowering to run away, that it was about them coming into their true identity, releasing themselves from those who are in judgement of their journey, not meeting them or not understanding. The great depth and subtlety of the song helped me to guide these clients to where they really need to go - inside, home, facing fears of rejection and being truly seen courageously. Do we want to be Warm Queens or Ice Queens? Tempting to be an Ice Queen but much more fun and courageous to be a Warm Queen!!! Ahhhhhh, an interesting synchronistic day on all accounts. On a lighter note, it was super cute watching my gorgeous little boy. Soooo cute as he sang and moved passionately!! A few smiling tears always fall when I see my kids up on stage : )
