Wow! Im reading some of the comments in this post and I just want to shake some of these people. Listen, you walk one, long, 24 hour day with these men and women and then have an opinion on whether they deserve to be taken care of when they retire. They run into buildings to rescue your loved ones, pets, and possessions. They are on the side of a road helping deliver babies, and scraping peoples bodies off the street. Ever thought about it? How much is your life worth to you? How much money would you want to receive to risk your life for a complete stranger? Well, I can tell you what the city pays is not enough. Most of these heroes work 2 jobs to pull in enough money to live in todays society and if you want to live comfortably, the spouse works too. They miss bedtimes, school plays, holidays, and normal schedules. They have nightmares recalling things people should never see- they bury their brothers and sisters that they couldnt save. They will fight disease caused from the fumes & toxins along with dealing with the wear and tear from a job that requires them to physically exert themselves sometimes beyond normal limitations. If you are reading this and you are my friend- I beg you to educate yourself about what the mayor is proposing and then to learn more about The facts not her facts. Our heroes work NOW for their retirement-They certainly dont do this job for the $20 and hour paycheck. This is a calling- Please, educate yourself on the fund and the issues. If so inclined, please share so others can be aware. I can honestly say if this didnt effect my future, I wouldnt make time to understand it. But it does- and it is unjust!
