Wow! My first paid job was @ the Union Beach Hess Station @ 17..I was quickly promoted by Wally Frank & Charlie Apple, the outstanding franchise owners--to Shift Manager. Handling these trucks was part of our responsibilities, in addition to washing each window, front & rear; checking oil & transmission fluid (we had profit sharing on sales,a generous offer); wiping headlights, and even checking tire pressure,in our white uniforms....do folks remember all of that? It was also very strange as a teen, to be supervising my old KHS pals (I had dropped out), and the economy was bad then, even supervising guys in their 40s. F*** *******, and I were even held up @ gunpoint. But the idiot, didnt see the money bag w/ all of the cash, tucked behind Charlie Apples back belt, and he always faced towards the perp. Of course, we had a standard panic button, and after he fled, I recall that Joe Nappi Jr., & another cop responded (not sure if it was Michael Ennis),but by that time though, the skell was ghost.. Strangely enough, I was also called upon by Hess, to show the new owner of the Asbury Park Hess; and later the Middletown Hess owner (Guy), how to open, handle business, and how the team effectively functioned, etc. This is the very last year btw good folks, that the trucks will be sold Hess stations, see story for details. Im now in NYC, do folks still buy these; ever worked @ Hess...and remember when the UB Hess 1st opened, in the 70s?
