Wow.... ... ...Thanks for all the kind and loving birthday wishes!! I finished my European trio tour with Barry Altschul and Mark Helias about a week ago, and the music I wrote for these guys was jumping off the stage! I cant wait to record this stuff with two of my heroes-- two of the people that helped develop this music. Thank you to everyone to came out and supported it! Right afterwards, I took time for a little R&R in the DR... no laptop, no constant internet. I fixed up the mixes for my forthcoming record featuring Luis Perdomo, Yasushi Nakamura and Rudy Royston (and Tom Harrell on a couple of tracks), as well as continued to work on a solo sopranino saxophone record I hope to record soon. And of course got some swimming and beach time in! But best of all was to get home just now and see so many well wishes from friends, family and others around the jazz community that I dont even know that well! Getting a year older isnt necessarily fun, but when so many in the community take time out of their busy days and send warm heartfelt greetings, it means the world to someone. People talk about Facebook having so much judgement and negativity, but when you receive so many birthday greetings from so many different people, I cant help but think that the nay-sayers are completely wrong-- social media can be such a powerful, uplifting and positive force in the lives of so many. Ive been so moved by this outpouring of love for my birthday that Im going to make sure to pay it forward-- positive vibes and well-wishes of success for all artists that are trying to find their way in this world that doesnt give a rats ass about them! Im going to continue to support other artists vision because, yeah, we all need support from our community; if our own community doesnt lift us up, support us, and cheer us on, who will?! So, from the bottom of my heart, thanks so much to everyone for taking time out of your days to write such positive and life-affirming messages for my birthday!! All I can say is, wow. And thank you. Sitting here in my living room, Im stunned as I witnessed firsthand after being offline for the last week how support and positive thinking and a sense of community can really affect someone. So, did I miss anything while I was away? And, Im playing tomorrow night with the Pedro Giraudo Big Band at the Zinc Bar! Come hang out and celebrate his great music! Love, Jon
