Wow, letter writing is a lost art that Ive decided I want to return to. Unpacking stuff I havent seen in 3 years is yielding surprises. Id forgotten that I kept so many letters that Ive received over the years. Letters from my mother and other relatives, from my very absent father demanding to know why I wasnt married yet and demanding that he should be the one to give me away when I finally did, from exes, postcards from lovely men who were sweet on me and who I let get away because I just wasnt on the ball enough, from friends, from people who signed off with love always and who Ive lost touch with many years ago. Its all kind of bittersweet but also a good aide-memoire. I must have been quite the letter writer myself to receive so many in return. And its grist to the writing mill. Email just doesnt cut the same impact although I received a lovely email that resembled a letter in the old-fashioned sense of the word yesterday. Strange how you forget to remember certain things, people, times. It feels like the brain pushes out more important things to make way for irrelevant chatter. Im glad Im a bit of a hoarder. Yes, definitely more letter writing from now on.
