Wow, this book by historian Philip Jenkins are blowing my mind away. In this book, he described a horrible church controversy about Christs nature that lasted 200 years. It caused series of civil wars and endless genocide in the Eastern Roman Empire (date fifth and sixth century). Bottom line: This church controversy devastated the empire and weakened it enough for Muslims to conquer most of it. It caused the destruction of African and Middle East Christianity. For example, did you know that Alexandria, Antioch, Carthage, and Jerusalem used to be premier centers of early Christendom (tying Rome and Constantinople in influence and prestige)? All gone now (only Rome remains). The church controversy was between two factions called Chalcedons (two natures in one person) and Monophysites (Christ had only one nature - divine). The author said this controversy killed more people than the Inquisition. (Wow!) Chalcedons emerged from this controversy victorious and was the forefather of Christology practiced by Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants. Five hundreds years after Christ supposedly rose from the dead, they finally had a correct, common doctrine about Christ. This kind of history is what caused me to be an Atheist. Church history has proved that churches are fraught with human problems. It is not a Holy Spirit filled movement. Holy Spirit did not dwell within Christians. Christians in the past have slaughtered other Christians. The Bible is the product of human agents. Churches have been corrupted many times. Many Christians would protest and claim that their particular church is the true Christian church! I say rubbish! For example, do you know that non-denominational churches are less than 50 years old? Pentecostal is less than 150 years old. Baptists are less than 400 years old. How could this be? How could true biblical churches be so young? Christianity is 2,000 years old in comparison. The answer is... churches have been corrupted so many times in the past. Many infighting has occurred and led to many church divisions. That is why presently we have thousands of different Christian denominations with different conflicting doctrines. This book will prove that there is no God and definitely no Jesus Christ.
