Wow, this has spoke to me today. Can you picture God covering His ears because He hates what He hears? According to the Bible, there is a certain type of music God hates. But what is it? It has to be rock & roll, right? After all, it is the devil’s music. Nope. Is it country or bluegrass? No, not them either. How about rap, hip-hop or jazz? Uh uh. Maybe it’s classical, pop, heavy metal, soul R & B, reggae or the blues? Wrong again; it’s none of those. You see, God does not hate a particular genre. The music God hates has nothing to do with its genre, melody or instrumentation. In fact, it has nothing to do with music at all. The type of music God hates is music (designed to glorify Him) that flows from a hypocritical heart. That is one thing He cannot stand! There was a time when the nation of Israel was corrupt with injustice. The wealthy took advantage of the poor; the court system ran rampant with extortion and bribery. God was not pleased with them: “I hate all your show and pretense—the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings. I won’t even notice all your choice peace offerings. Away with your noisy hymns of praise! I will not listen to the music of your harps. Instead, I want to see a mighty flood of justice, an endless river of righteous living.” (Amos 5:21-24) Because their hearts weren’t right, He rejected their worship, calling it “noisy hymns of praise.” And I wonder: could God feel the same way about our worship? If we turn our backs on God all week and then go through the motions on Sunday morning, we may as well stay home. If we pray with false motives or sing from hypocritical hearts, we may as well save our breath. God will not be mocked; he knows your heart, from which either “noisy hymns” or genuine worship flows. So let’s make sure our worship is real and our hearts are true. “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:23-24)
