Wow...was I wrong. I thought Jerrod Niemanns Donkey, especially coming on the heels of #1 Drink To That All Night, would be an instant hit. Featuring Hip-Hop elements to be sure, the song was still Country to my ears, a party classic on the order of Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy) a decade ago. Furthermore, Im proud that Y108 gave this song airplay. But after less than eight weeks, Donkey petered out at the bottom of the Country charts and label Sea Gayle/Aristas onto a third Jerrod Niemann single. There is much concern in Country Radio over the current proliferation of Bro-Country. I see Donkeys failure as a sign that the Bro-Country trend has limits, and perhaps is an early indicator that this trend has run its course. We shall see.
