Wow, was this ever a pleasant surprise. No, its more than that. I LOVED this. Which still stuns me given that I expected nothing more from it than a typical generic genre distraction. And it is clearly inspired by some pretty obvious forebearers (shades of The Matrix, Shane Carruth, Josh Tranks Chronicle, Richard Kelly, even Michael Bay abound) so at first I wasnt anticipating much and was vastly unprepared for what I got. Because even though this is actually a fairly simple story when you finally look at it as a whole and its not necessarily innovative in terms of substance or content, what makes the difference is that this is carried off with consummate *excellence* and it renews the vitality of its antecedents and inspirations. What a glorious, thrilling thing to see. Just in terms of simply sustaining an effective mood, managing it well and evoking a genuine disconcerting chill William Eubank displays finely tuned capabilities we rarely get from anybody these days (especially in genre work) and which Id almost given up on ever seeing again. I didnt like Eubanks Love all that much when I saw it earlier this year but now Ill have to look at it again. I cant wait to see what he does next. And that goes for Brenton Thwaites too. This guy is definitely the real deal, exerting a powerful presence in ways I had almost given up on seeing as well. Now Ill have to watch Oculus and The Giver (though I probably would have anyway). Given his sudden appearance in all kinds of stuff, Hollywood at least seems to realize what they have.
