Wrestle Wilmania How quickly life can turn on you. A good deed goes bad. Seems like just yesterday, or was it 2 days ago, I was proud of how well Mom was doing, proud of the cocoa concoction that had helped her legs and arms fill out. I had noticed she had resumed her leg lifts. I’ve seen her do more than an active Marine. I’ve always loved how life humbles us and sometimes teaches us to be careful what you wish for. It’s Friday afternoon and Wrestle Mania has found its way to this house. The Wily Wrestler of the West, Wild Wilma, got the drop on me. It started with rapid swings, right, left. I was able to fend them off. I asked. “Are you trying to hit me?” She stopped and in the most sincere tone replied, “No, I’d… I would never.” I moved her to the recliner, sat on the floor to give her a pedicure and whoosh, a leg went flying past my head. “Did you just try to kick me?” “No”, she lied. “Well, I would hope not but maybe you could explain why your foot was in my face?”. No response. Mm, hmm. I reached over to get some balm out of a basket. It was fast. A flash then boom. Right at the base of my nose. “Now that was not nice.” I said as I put a towel to my nose checking for blood. “I thought you said you weren’t trying to kick me?” She looked me straight in the eyes and said, “I didn’t”. I don’t know if that meant she didn’t kick me or she didn’t say that. Either way, it was a lie. I remember when I was young, Friday evenings had World Wide Wrestling. My sister and I loved when the Kentuckians would take on the masked Assassins. It would be a tag team match and the big suspense was to see if the masks of the Assassins would be torn off by our heroes the Kentuckians to reveal the identity of the evil duo. They never were that I recall. That was over fifty years ago. It got me thinking about Mother’s strength and her moves. She would have been in her late twenties then. I’m starting to get suspicious of exactly where was she on Friday nights when the masked Assassins were in the ring at the Bell Auditorium. I’m debating no more cocoa.
