Written by Hlulani Masingi I’m not talking about the musician who broke into the Limpopo Hip-Hop Industry and got his hit aired by Munghana Lonene FM decades ago. The one who raps rhymes you can’t flow with because all he sounds like to you is a kwerekwere. *sigh* it is me I am degrading - I am a Muchangana. Yes, I am but right now I’m taking back the derogatory word you use as a way to demean me when I try to socialize with the Ngunis and Sothos. As for the Vendas, you and I are wearing the same shoes… Wait, we do not wear shoes they say – walking barefoot is our culture, in my own country I am treated like an outsider. You’ve insulted me ever since I was young, saying I don’t fit in South Africa because I come from Mozambique, is there something wrong with one being from there? I believe whichever tongue one speaks the medium thought of expression is still put in the air. You’ve told me the colours of the clothes I wear scream and shout - they are too bright. Ever heard of the word “style”; Lebo Mashile says “it is in my essence and in my people”. The reason you are wearing Red, Orange, Green, Purple and Yellow with no sense of essence almost every day is that we are trendsetters. This is a free country so anybody can do whatever they want, wherever they want and speak whatever language they want without being forced. The minute I utter words in the tongue of my mother it is considered wrong simply because this is Johannesburg. Who’s Johannesburg is it anyway because Tom, Dick and Okonkwo are here and they can gibber Igbo or French whenever they feel like? Why is it wrong for me to be who I am in my own country? Being judged by people who don’t even know where some parts of the country are situated its hilarious – hi Xichangana hi ri GAAAA!!! No language is better than the other; therefore, no person’s attitude will stop me when I raise my voice and be heard. I’ll wear my colours with pride and speak Xichangana whenever and wherever I want. So if you only hear what most Xenophobists call “kwerekwere” because you do not understand - well, I don’t have wings but I’m too fly to make you understand! However understand this - I am Shangaan and you are not allowed to call me that – don’t ask why for I am not Capitec Bank, It’s just the way it is! Twitter: @rivahmakhaya & @FanaThePurp @Randzoo
