In 1880 the South Florida Railroad began operation, running a train from Sanford to Orlando. Due to financial problems that line was bought out by Mr Henry B Plant. In 1895 Mr. Plant, (which owned a system of railroads & steamships) brought cross-state rail transportation to Sanford. This service enabled northerners to board one of his steam-ships in Jacksonville, travel by boat to Sanford, then board his train to vacation in St. Pete. That railway, of course stretched from Sanford, westward to St Petersburg. His trainline was called The Plant System as shown here in a trading card.
