Written by Miss Kate This week has been incredibly difficult. Ive struggled to form any words that I feel are an adequate tribute for Miss Peggie . Rather than a tribute, Id like to offer a reflection on Miss Peggies life. Know that theres so much more I could say to honor her, but I realize no one has time to read a biography. You cant climb a mountain by looking at it. The mountain adequately describes the emotions that well up each time Ive walked into the studio this week, or reflected on the many, many years of life shared with Miss Peggie. Im so thankful that God brought Miss Peggie into my life and used her to shape me and countless other young women into who we are today. I see her dripping from each of her students in all sorts of ways. Those who knew her (and now, even those who didnt), have been marked by her. Its something that cant be changed. The world needs more Miss Peggies. She spoiled no one, yet we who knew her were incredibly spoiled. She lived with integrity. She didnt play favorites. She believed in VERY hard work. She was brutally honest -- and as much as we didnt like it at the time, it was that same honesty that won our respect. She never half-did anything. She taught us to be grateful for the little things that often go unnoticed. I remember her asking us often when was the last time you thanked your mother for dinner?. She made a bunch of wild little girls want to become ladies. She taught us to be confident, but not conceited. She taught us that we were NEVER too good to move beyond the fundamentals of ballet (or anything for that matter). She was the everyday hero and she believed that anything was possible for her students. I can remember when I discovered that most people dont use chairs for ballet barres and they certainly dont dance on carpet. But by that time, it didnt matter because Miss Peggie had so ingrained in us that a poor workman always blames his tools. She was right. Ive had the privilege of going around the world using the precious gifts Miss Peggie gave me, and every bit of it has rung true. She gave me the ability to keep my poise (and humor) in the midst of crippling circumstances. Her precepts have kept me from throwing in the proverbial towel on countless occasions. While I believe no words are adequate to sum up the measure of her life and influence, I hope these words provide a glimpse of who she was. As for the rest, look around you. Find her students. When you find them, you have found her. And when youve found her, youve found excellence. Perfection? No! But you WILL find excellence. She gave us so much more than dance. She gave us a foundation for life. Build your house on the Rock and not the shifting sands of cultural norms and trends. Love you too, Miss Peggie.
