Written by a fellow member.... Bruce, addict. I got clean for the last time on September 20, 2001. I think the fellowship is what saves me on a daily basis; the therapeutic value of one addict helping another is without parallel. This is the reason I’m so interested in NA unity, and I understand that unity is dependent on proper application of the traditions. To the degree that god is moved aside in our fellowship, addicts will be unable to remain clean. I celebrated my second year in Aarhus, Denmark where the Basic Text was being translated into Danish. There I became aware of the relationship of World Services and NAWS to the worldwide fellowship. In Europe, the treatment industry is more involved in the fellowship than it is in the United States. I found out addicts translated the Basic Text and signed it over to World; I thought World had always gone to great expense to translate the text into various languages. It was surprising that the local addicts actually did the work, and that World then gained ownership of the translation. Danish addicts insisted that English word ‘addict’ be used in the translation in favor of the term ‘dependent,’ favored by Danish treatment industry which rejects the disease model of addiction. When the book was published, World Services sided with treatment centers in Denmark and used the word ‘dependent.’ Danish addicts refused to sign over the translation, and a protracted battle began. It was at that point I realized that if addicts don’t stand up and run our fellowship as god had intended, we would lose our ability to recover. An important part of the recovery process for addicts is to take responsibility for the NA fellowship.
