Written in Shreveport, LA, hometown of Kenny Wayne Shepherd and just two hours from where I grew up in Camden, AR, we would have to wait until KWS got out of high school to work. He was only 17. On the highway from Camden to Shreveport you pass the Louisiana Hayride where so many country legends and Elvis performed. Born With a Broken Heart was the first song we wrote and the first single off his first record. It went to the Top 10 of the Rock Charts and showcased one of the finest guitar players Ive had the privilege to work with. Stevie Ray Vaughan was KWSs mentor, so we wrote this as a tribute to him at Kenny Waynes suggestion. I had the great fortune to open for SRV in Memphis in 1984. We (East of Eden) were supposed to do a 45 minute set, but the alternate stage across the way caught fire cancelling the show of Berlin, so we continued playing through the inferno and completed a 90 minuter. SRV sat on the side of the stage and observed our guitar player, Stan Lassiter. One of the great things about the musical journey is getting to meet and work with some of the great musicians and legends. Chris Layton, drummer for SRV and Double Trouble, would join the KWS Band in years to come. Killed by a bullet from a six-string gun, bang a drum, oh why do the good die young....
