X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST- Well its good to have Bryan Singer - TopicsExpress

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST- Well its good to have Bryan Singer back. This movie could easily be called (for me) the most quintessentially X-Men movie yet made. Mostly as a fan of the 90s cartoon show as opposed to the comics, when I think of the X-Men what comes to mind is Wolverine, Professor X, sentinels, and some trippy cosmic war stuff. Building wisely of off both the good parts of the recent X-Men: First Class as well as his own previous entries, Singer repositions this franchise much the same way Joss Whedon made Avengers or Abrams retouched Star Trek. Which is to say by somehow both validating the series failures while simultaneously erasing them. The action is inventive, the stakes are high and for a movie packed with cameos nobody feels out of place. What stops it short of being the top of its field is the fact that while previous entries shared the emotional resonance amongst all of its characters, Days of Future Past is really only focused on Mystique. While Wolverine is our point of view, hes mostly the inciting incident and fan-favorite matinee idol. Quicksilver and Beast, while really cool, are kind of window dressing. Even Charles and Magneto kind of just rehash their usual dynamic. Jennifer Lawrence has the most developing to really do for her character and its her movements that truly steer the film. In my opinion, the most compelling themes of the better films in this franchise have always been shared more equally by their characters. Mind you, Im only splitting hairs between my other favorite films in the franchise- which are also Singers. This is an incredibly entertaining movie. Grade: A-
