Friend, Today is an exciting day - I get to share one of my favorite stories as we celebrate the anniversary of Tennessee voting to ratify the 19th Amendment. On a morning in 1920, a 24-year-old legislator named Harry Burns, from East Tennessee, was pinning on his red rose to show he was planning to vote against the 19th Amendment. Against Women’s Suffrage. Against giving women the right to vote. But then something changed. The youngest member of the Tennessee House of Representatives received a note from his mother. It was a simple note. Just a mother talking to her son, but it changed everything. The vote to ratify had been tied, but Harry’s mind was changed. When Harry screamed his “aye” into the record, Tennessee became the final state needed to ratify the 19th Amendment and grant women the right to vote. It all comes down to a single conversation and reminds us that the small moments matter. This fall, as we’re fighting to protect women’s rights in Tennessee, I will keep this story in mind.
