YANTRA : THE VISUAL TOOL Yantras are visual tool that serve as Centering devices. They are the symbolic compositions of the energy patterns of a deity or planet as seen by Tantric seers in their visions. The KULARNAV TANTRA says: YANTRAM MANTRA MAYAM PROKTAM MANTRATIM DEVATAIV HI DEHAT MANOR YATHA BHEDO YANTRA DEVATAYOSTATHA. This means “that deity pervades both Yantra and Mantra. As there is a difference between mind and body, similarly there is difference between Yantra and Mantra. Yantra is the body or form of the deity(devata),whereas Mantra is the Mind, Consciousness, Spirit , or Name. Just like oil is dear to the lamp , so is the body dear to the spirit and Yantra to deity, Because Yantra is external, visual expression through which the deity receives the devotion.” When Yantra is adopted for worship and energy is invoked in it, it becomes the dwelling place of the deity by whose name it is known and no idol or picture of a deity is as powerful as a Yantra. YANTRA = YAM + TRA (In Sanskrit) “YAM” means to hold , to contain or to keep the essence of an object or a thought . “TRA”(comes from trana) means “Liberation from Bondage” “So a Yantra is that which preserves the essence and liberates !!!” As a tool , YANTRA is used to withdraw consciousness from the outer world and direct it to the inner world , so as to help the sadhak go beyond the normal framework of the mind to the altered state of consciousness (Known as TURIYA) . • “GANESH YANTRA”- The effect of meditation on Ganesha’s Yantra is “TO INSPIRE THE SADHAK TO CREATE BALANCE IN HIMSELF OR HERSELF”. - The bhupur is of a radiant GREEN (a mixture of Hot Yellow and Cool Blue) is very powerful and is the colour of balance. Meditation on this green produces its complementary colour , red. Red , a colour that is noticeable from a distance , is the colour of life , inspiration , revolution , and freedom from all rules and regulations. -The eight-petaled LOTUS of vermilion colour represents the “OCTAVE OF PRAKRITI (the primordial nature)” : (1) Akasha , (2) Air , (3) Fire , (4) Water , (5) Earth , (6) Sattva , (7) Rajas , and (8) Tamas. - The six-pointed STAR of light saffron colour represents the balance created by the superimposition of one upward-pointing male triangle and one downward-pointing female triangle. - The Yellow upward-pointing triangle in the middle of the six-pointed star represents the Male Sap, the elixir of Immortality. The colour of this triangle is same as Ganesha’s skin colour. - The Bindu , which is seated in the middle of the triangle inside the six-pointed star , “IS GANESHA HIMSELF” . Meditation on this “Bindu” is the main object of Yantra worship. It is of a Radiant Golden colour –attractive and soothing to the eyes.
