YES VOTE GIVES BETTER DEAL FOR PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS PUBLIC SECTOR UNION GIVES NO CAMP THUMBS DOWN ON WORKERS ISSUES The opportunities of a Yes vote for public sector workers have been highlighted again today, after the public sector union PCS delivered a resounding thumbs up to the Yes campaign – and showed little support for the No camp. The public sector union had asked a series of 20 questions on workers issues of representatives of the Yes and No campaigns and ranked the answers with a thumbs up , thumbs down or ‘not specified’– with the union only supporting one answer from the No campaign. In contrast, the answers put forward by the Yes side received 16 ‘thumbs up’ from the union. The Scottish Government has a strong record on public services and is operating a policy of no compulsory redundancies, while the number of UK Government Civil Service jobs in Scotland has continued to fall – plummeting from 35,300 in 2005 to 27,000 now, according to research from SPICe. Commenting, the SNP’s Derek Mackay said: “This welcome analysis by PCS highlights the incredible opportunities of Yes for our public sector workers – investing in public services, ending austerity and ensuring support for low paid workers. “That the No campaign’s answers received little support from public sector workers is no wonder – the No camp is nothing more than a front for a Tory party which is intent on devastating our public services with its austerity and cuts agenda. “The number of UK government civil service jobs in Scotland have already been slashed by Westminster – and with Westminster planning more cuts down the line the situation will only get worse in the event of a No vote. “The opportunity to protect our public services and stand up for public sector workers is one of the reasons why more and more Labour voters – and people across Scotland – are waking up to the opportunities of independence and moving to Yes. “A Yes vote is Scotland’s one opportunity to put an end to the economic madness of Westminster’s austerity agenda and to ensure the rights of workers are protected – and public sector workers should grab that opportunity with both hands.
