YES. Was just thinking about this the other day. Great deconstruction. Another two things I wanted to point out: -No one criticized gender roles in the old white cultures in Disney movies at this point (I mean, yay Brave, but Mulan was the first). So the idea of LOOK HOW OPPRESSIVE gives girls an incentive to identify without overtly saying that this happens in our culture too--distancing it as look how bad it WAS! Over THERE! But now it is much better here, and girl power! Yeah! Um, its pretty bad here, and now. -The idea of a woc being strong? Not new. White women are seen as frail. Woc have been expected to be strong--so they could be used for work (slavery). So uh, yay feminist princess movie? Bronze star, Disney, you tried (kinda). Not saying its wrong to love this movie. Just good to recognize these things. The more people know about problematic media, theres more of a chance of a better standard emerging.
