Decemberfest is a fun, charity Holiday party that benefits the Community Resource Center’s (CRC) Holiday Baskets program. This year CRC expects to serve approximately 1,500 families in need- approximately 6,000 individuals half of whom are children. Decemberfest has been held annually since 2007 sponsored by myself with a band, caterers, open bar, Santa, photographer, and largely staffed by volunteers from the CRC. Each year the CRC gets applications from families in Coastal North County San Diego. Those who meet the economic need threshold are allowed to come to the 1st floor of the Del Mar Racetrack Grandstand during a designated weekend of December. This year it will be December 19-21. The area is staged by CRC with food baskets, clothing, and a separate area for toys. There is also another separated area for bikes refurbished by the CRC. Generally, qualified families are met by a CRC volunteer with a cart and are led through a warehouse-like setting at a venue the size of a football field. They are allowed to pick out a limited number of outerwear clothing articles. Parents are then led around a partition to the toy area where they are allowed to pick out 1 toy for each of their children. Based on need, a few parents also receive a surprise voucher where they are also led around still another segregated area where they can pick out a refurbished bike. I have seen many parents overcome with emotion as they were able to pick out a gift for their child they knew their child would love that they otherwise would not get. This type of experience aids local families in need in a very direct way that maintains a higher level of dignity as they are able to virtually shop at the Del Mar Grandstand in a store-like environment. We recently received an email from CRC advising me that although we provided almost 25% of their presents last year, they were still struggling last minute to obtain enough toys for the almost 3,000 children who participate in Holiday Baskets. We are asking everyone this year to bring at least two (2) unwrapped, non-violent presents of a $15.00 value for a child from 2-16 years of age, so we can be sure the CRC need is met. (Note: gifts for 12 -16 are often overlooked so consider something as well in that range if you can) This year, we are graciously blessed with co-sponsors as noted on the invitation to make this year’s Decemberfest as special as always with a couple of fun changes from the past years!! I am hoping to continue this event with more co-sponsors in the future to make it a sustainable and great party for a wonderful local charity at this very special time of year. I hope this finds you healthy, well and happy - and I hope to see you at Decemberfest Yours with love, Bing
