YOU ARE THE ONLY SANE DRIVER ON THE ROAD The issue of accidents is a burning one and as much as we blame it on over speeding, recklessness, drunkenness etc. Drivers have a huge role to play in ensuring their own safety and those of the passengers or those around them. Judgment, terming yourself as the only sane driver on the road, calculating one’s next move are some of the roles attached to the driver. Sample this; the last year’s star bus accident encounter in which I was a victim was a preventable one. After the driver picked a passenger on the road, about a few meters ahead, he noticed a lorry that aimed at crossing over the road at a wrong point in order to join the main road on the opposite direction i.e. away from town. In fact he loudly exclaimed, “sasa huyu anajaribu?” That was a clear indication that his judgment was somewhat right, the truck driver had an insane idea of crossing over the road at a wrong point and on an unclear main road. But what did the star bus driver do instead; he accelerated hoping the stupid truck driver would not proceed with the madness. But alas! The truck driver went ahead also hoping that the star bus driver has seen him and would not proceed or would slow down. The results were ugly, in a bid to avoid a crash the star bus swerved (this is a technique commonly used by public vehicles nowadays) and rolled about 3 times. The rest is a story but I thank God for His protection. Today, a similar experience happened though milder for my experience. A small car intended to join the main road towards town near Waruku area, (whatever that name means, remember there is power in a name). It is my expectation that every driver approaching a road that joins the main road or exists towards the main road should slow down …….as much as those on the main road have right of way. Why? Because you are the only sane driver on the road remember and apart from God you do not expect others to carefully protect your life. The star bus driver clearly read the intentions of the small car and maybe at some point never thought that that small car would join the main road while it was unclear. (That is why you are the only sane driver on the road and make use of your judgment gift, God gave you perfect brains to think and reason). He was wrong, the small car make good its intentions and the next thing was a bad swerve that would make a bus roll. I kept wondering why there is too much traffic with so many personal vehicles on the road…….there is a good reason. If these public driven vehicles care less of my safety then I take charge of my own. Purchase my own to ensure that under the cover of the blood of Jesus I exercise caution; protect my dear life and that of my loved ones. You are the only sane driver on the road; make proper judgment that will neither endanger your life nor that of others around you. Stay safe. By Fridah Wanja
