Wat Pra Baht Nam Phu: The Buddhist Temple that Cares for Full-blown AIDS patients With the limited health workforce in the public health care system and the situation of HIV/AIDS that Thailand is facing, Wat Phra Baht Nam Phu has filled the gap as the non-government sector, particularly the religious sector, that could contribute enormously to the health of HIV/AIDS patients. Comprehensive health care to HIV/AIDS patients is provided by monks, professional health care providers, and volunteers and this becomes an excellent skill mix to deal with bio-psycho-social aspect of health. Wat Phra Baht Nam Phu, is a temple located in the hills of Lopburi, 120 km north of Bangkok. It has played an important role in providing care for HIV/AIDS patients since 1992, led by Pra Alongkot. For almost 20 years Wat Phra Baht Nam Phu has been the place for desperate HIV/AIDS patients. Wat Phra Baht Nam Phu began providing physical and mental health care to HIV/AIDS patients since 1992. In addition to providing care to HIV/AIDS patients, the temple also looks after orphans affected by HIV/AIDS infection. Approximately 2,000 patients are under the temples care. Of these, 1,300 are orphans. The temple has two main sources of financial support, approximately 100,000 Baht per month from the Thai government and from donations.
