YOU are making a positive difference to many. Some you know, and some you never will. The friend, family member, acquaintance, stranger that knows what you are training for.... they havent told you yet ... maybe they never will, but your efforts have inspired them to make a positive change in their life. Perhaps today they put down the cigarettes, confront a fear, or got off the couch to walk once around the block. The cancer patient who you give hope to. The loved one of a cancer patient who you inspire and takes it back home to help the healing. Obvious, but a reminder... you are making a positive contribution to your own being by making the decision to get up at the crack of dawn to run every Saturday.... deciding to get in your midweeks when... you dont feel like it, but you do it anyhow unless injured or sick. Unfortunately, at this time, cancer is rampant. Theres a strong chance that one or more of us (if we havent already) will hear a doctor say the words.. You have cancer. Your efforts today may save a teammate tomorrow. We are helping each other. The miles we run together and the funds we raise together make a difference for all. Keep up the great work TEAM! BEAT cancer. Heres an email from Doctor Smith (the man who leads an important injury prevention clinic for our seasons) ================================== From: Steve Smith Subject: Ice Packs for runners To: Kiley Akers Date: Thursday, April 17, 2008, 3:58 PM Kiley, The Ice Man came today. Hes the guy that always brings ice packs to my office. Ive been doing business with him for about 18 years. Hes congenial fellow and always insists on coming to the office to deliver his product in person. He really doesnt have to, he has a nation wide distribution team but I think he values the customers who helped him get started. I had a little time to talk to him today and I told him about TNT. He seemed a little out of sorts when I told him that I donate his products to TNT and at first I couldnt figure out why. I continued to explain about how you guys raise millions and millions of dollars to help sick people who you do not know and will never see. I talked a little about the bond of kindness and help that your organization has with its participants. I told him about how the mentors and coaches donate their time out of a sense of duty and purpose. I gave my opinion that in the end when the marathon is done and everyone is at the finish line it is a spiritual experience that unites the most unlikely people in a loving way. He was quiet for a moment, then He began to speak, slowly at first. He told me about Angel Castillo who worked with him from when he first started. Angel helped him to build his business. He drove from Compton to Palmdale every week where it soon became clear that Angel was a very hard worker. He took the assembly of ice packs seriously, hand sealed each and every one. He hand laminated my business cards and placed them inside the ice packs. Later his wife and kids would join him in the business and it grew and prospered. Angel never required any supervision. They would spend the night at the wharehouse so they could get an early start in the morning. The Ice Man became a little teary eyed as he continued his story. He told me that He went to Angels funeral on Tuesday. Angel had battled with Leukemia for the last four years. He lost his fight a week ago. Angel got sick at the same time that I gave the first ice packs to TNT. I would like to think those ice packs have something special in them. They were touched by a man who loved his work and his fellows. He worked there up to two weeks before he died. A man who bakes his bread without love feeds but half a man. Those ice packs ARE special. Ill just bet that a few more folks finish their marathon because of Angel Castillo. Warmest Regards, Steve Smith
