YOUNG STUDENTS WORKING ON INDO-DANISH RELATIONS From April 25 - TopicsExpress

YOUNG STUDENTS WORKING ON INDO-DANISH RELATIONS From April 25 till May 11, three students from the Sornammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School in India and their teacher, Mrs. Rebecca Victor, visited Denmark. How this exchange came about is a bit of a fairytale, which takes its beginning in Chennai, where a delegation of volunteers from Microsoft and two teachers from Tornvedskolen in Kildebjerg came to visit the school on their way to a Trust run by Ole Hoyer of Energy Excellence. The two teachers from Tornvedskolen were very impressed by the students at Sornammal School, who are mostly underprivileged children from the local society and thus, first generation scholars. They therefore decided to come back and interact with the children, and as they did they talked to Mrs. Victor about an exchange programme between the two schools. Through hard work and mutual enthusiasm, it all came true this spring, and the Indian delegation came to Denmark on April 25. Through the weeks, they have lived with Danish families, who opened their home to them, and they have met with the students of Kildebjerg and Jyderup schools, educating them about India, their city, and their school. They were met with curiosity and questions about their culture, and they even got to introduce the Indian cuisine to the Danish students and their families. It has, though, not been all work for the Indian delegation. Fortunately, they also had time to visit one of their host families 250-years old summer house in Sweden, which, they said, looked almost like a museum and taught them a lot about how people used to live in the Nordic regions. Furthermore, they went on a trip to Copenhagen and walked through all the major streets, looking at the architecture and all the sculptures that give Copenhagen its enchanting atmosphere. Despite the rain, they even visited the Zoo, Rosenborg Castle and Tivoli, and they were invited for a seminar at Microsoft. Mrs. Victor wrote and told us about their experience, and we are very pleased and grateful to hear that exchange between our two countries is taking place even among the youth of our nations, or, as we could also call them, the future ambassadors. According to Mrs. Victor, Denmark has left a lasting impression, and as she herself says: The country side was so green and yellow with fields of rapeseed and the spring colours on the trees. We were even able to see horses and cows in the farms of some of our host families. We would definitely go back to enjoy the beauty and the serenity of the fields, the woods, and the lakes - and the splendour of the buildings and castles. We have learnt the Danish way of living first hand from our hosts and gained insight into the traditions and culture. We feel that we have made many long lasting friendships with the Danes. Luckily, the fairytale does not end here, from October 22 till November 5, twelve students and three teachers form Kildebjerg and Jyderup will visit the Sornammal School in Chennai, and they hope to continue these visits on an annual basis. We wish them all good luck, and we hope to hear more about the initiative in the future. Thank you so much for sharing!
