YOUR SINGLE-ISSUE CAMPAIGN QUIZ OF THE DAY Okay, students: Here is HSUS CEO/Prez Wayne Pacelle protesting Japans Shameful Butchery of Dolphins. goo.gl/uqkpa8 Here is HSUS CEO/Prez Wayne Pacelle on the Board of the Global Animal Partnership, which promotes happy meat, which, of course, requires butchering: goo.gl/AOiTMY What is the difference between what the Japanese are doing, to which Pacelle objects, and what the farmers are doing, which Pacelle supports and in which he is actually involved in promoting? A. Dolphins (remember Flipper?) have greater moral value than cows, pigs, chickens, fish, etc., and foreigners (especially the Japanese--remember WWII?) have less value. B. There is no difference--theres no morally relevant distinction between a cow (or any other domesticated nonhuman) and a dolphin, but focusing on the Japanese allows animal charities to capitalize on xenophobia, ethnocentrism, and just plain discrimination while we morally-superior Westerners sit and eat the Global-Animal Partnership-approved happy meat that we just got at Whole Foods. This is a tough one. Think carefully.
