YOURE FIRED! During my entire working life, I was only fired from a job once. During my Senior year of high school, in the fall of 1967, I went to work at Biels Grocery in South Park Center...SPID at Weber. Today the old store is occupied by a pawn shop (see photo). I was working as a cashier, checking out customers as I did every day, when the Assistant Manager, Mr. Kenneth Stracener, called me aside and said that he was sorry, but that I had to be fired. For what reason, I asked. He said that while I was checking out a customer, she asked the sacker to get her a carton of cigarettes and that I had failed to charge her for them. Unfortunately for me, Mr. Biel himself was the next person in my line and witnessed the whole thing. It was he who insisted that I be fired on the spot! I protested, insisting that I never heard the lady ask for the cigarettes nor did the sacker tell me that he had sacked them for her. That didnt matter, I was told. Mr. Biel wanted me fired and that was it. I was a diligent worker and this seemed so unfair. I even called Mr. Biel at his home to plead my case...to no avail. As embarrassed as I was, the firing turned out to be a blessing for me. Within the week, I was hired at Woolco. And just a few weeks later, 2 armed robbers entered the Biels store and shot Mr. Stracener...at the very register that I had manned! (see news article) Mr. Stracener barely recovered from the gunshot. Ironically, the following year, he became manager of the Maverick Market on Weber near Carroll H.S., and he hired me as his Assistant Manager. He told me that he had considered my firing at Biels as terribly unjust as well, and said that he himself was let go after he had recovered from his wounds. He was never really the same after that shooting.
