YOUTH CONGRESS, NSUI HELD A MASSIVE PROTEST, HALT TRAIN AT RAILWAY STATION JAMMU AGAINST MODI GOVERNMENT’S DECISION TO RAISE RAIL FARE PRESS RELEASE Jammu, 25 June 2014 J&K Pradesh Youth Congress and National Students’ Union India (NSUI) held a massive protest against the increase in railway fare and freight charges by Modi government. Youth Congress and NSUI activists protested and showed anger on the decision. They halted train at Jammu Tawi railway station. Meanwhile Police entered the station and had a scuffle with protesting activists and lathi charged them to evacuate the premises. The protesting activists chanted slogans against Modi government and demanded rolling back of the decision to raise the railway fare and freight charges. They also said that BJP has made a false promise to the people of the nation to give them “Achey Din” but in reality they are giving us “Expenssive days” by increasing the prices of essential commodities, one by one. The protesting YC & NSUI workers claimed that police resorted to mild lathicharge to evacuate the station following which the protest was called off. In his message to Protesting Youth Congress & NSUI workers, Shahnawaz Choudhary, State president of J&K Pradesh Youth Congress said that they will not sit silent till hike in rail fare is rolled back. He also warned of intensified agitation if the Centre continued to take such anti-people decisions. “BJP has betrayed the people in the name of “Achey Din” and after elections their good days nowhere in the list of their priorities, but the price hike is taking place on essentials one after the other” PYC chief added. While speaking to media and Protestants, Neeraj Kundan, state president of NSUI said that hike in railway fare is in not a healthy sign of good days and NSUI will protest till the rolling back of the anti-people decision of the central government. Increase in railways and gas fares will result in the increase in price of all commodities. When the BJP was campaigning before the elections, they had promised to curb inflation and cut down the cost of basic amenities. But only after a month of coming to power the BJP government has started increasing the price of everything protesters alleged. It is worthwhile to mention here that the government has recently announced increase in rail passenger fares by 14.2 percent and freight rates by 6.5 percent. Main NSUI activists who were present in the protest included Neeraj Kundan, State President J&K, Ajay Kumar, National Delegate, Avijot Singh & parikshit Shagotra, State General Secretaries, Abhishek Dogra, Nishant Gupta & Ranjodh Singh, State secretaries, Nitin Bakshi, President Jammu University, Arif Choudhary preisdent and puneet and Youth Congress leaders included Ajaz Choudhary, AYC president Mendhar, Jatinder Chib, AYC President Gandhi Nagar, Shabir Kohli, Manpreet and others.
