Yankees offense provides big cushion for David Robertson in 12-11 win over Texas ... Tuesday night was all lined up to be one of the Yankees’ best wins of the season. By the ninth inning, it looked like it might be their worst loss. The Bombers exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning, then survived a bullpen meltdown to beat the Rangers, 12-11, for a nail-biting victory. It was only the fourth win in 40 games this season when the Yankees have allowed five runs or more as the offense finally bailed out the pitching staff. The Yankees had only reached double digits in runs two other times this season: April 17 at Tampa Bay and April 24 at Boston. The bottom five hitters in the lineup combined to drive in eight of those runs, including two each from Carlos Beltran, Zoilo Almonte and Brendan Ryan. Brett Gardner went 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and three runs scored, while Mark Teixeira also went deep in his first start since July 20, also scoring three times. Brandon McCarthy wasn’t as good as he was in his first three starts with the Yankees, but the righthander improved to 3-0 with six innings of four-run ball. McCarthy gave up nine hits and walked one, striking out three in the victory. The bullpen made things interesting as Adam Warren loaded the bases in the seventh and Dellin Betances gave up a grand slam by J.P. Arencibia, who had two homers and seven RBI in the game. Teixeira’s homer got the lead back to four, but Chase Whitley allowed a run in the eighth and David Robertson allowed two runs in the ninth to pull Texas within a run. The Rangers had the bases loaded before Robertson got Adrian Beltre to fly out to end the game, recording his 27th save. The Yankees remain 4.5 games behind the first-place Orioles in the AL East and two games behind the Blue Jays in the race for the second AL wild card spot. Gardner continued his hot streak with a leadoff home run, his third in two days and sixth in July. Gardner now has 13 homers this season, extending his career-high. Starter Nic Martinez settled in after the leadoff blast, while McCarthy worked out of jams in each of the first two innings, stranding three runners on base, two of them in scoring position. McCarthy got two quick outs in the third, but much like David Phelps in the fifth inning Monday, the third out was far more difficult to secure. Alex Rios, Beltre and Jim Adduci had consecutive two-out singles, knotting the game at 1. Arencibia added a two-run double to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead as the Yankees watched Texas mount another frustrating two-out rally. Arencibia belted a solo homer against McCarthy in the fifth to push the lead to three. Gardner got the Yankees started in the sixth, leading off with a double, his third hit of the night. Derek Jeter was called out on a grounder to shortstop, but Joe Girardi successfully challenged the ruling, putting runners at first and second. Teixeira drew a one-out walk to load the bases, then Beltran stroked a two-run single to pull the Bombers within a run. Brian McCann’s sacrifice fly tied the game, but the Yankees weren’t done. Chase Headley walked, sending Martinez to the bench as Ron Washington turned to his bullpen. But Shawn Tolleson fared no better, allowing an RBI single by Almonte and a two-run double by Ryan that gave the Yankees a 7-4 lead. As bad as the inning was, it only got worse for Texas. Gardner drilled a ball to right-center that glanced off Rios’ glove and ricocheted into Martin’s head, the three-base error scoring another run to cap the Yankees’ seven-run frame. The seven-run inning was a season-high for the Yankees, who last scored that many runs in a frame last September 2 with an eight-run inning against the White Sox in the Bronx. Warren came in for the seventh with a six-run lead, but he walked two batters and gave up a hit, loading the bases. Girardi wasted no time in bringing in Betances, but Arencibia drilled a 97 mph fastball into the left-field seats, slicing the lead down to two. Leonys Martin followed with a triple, then Rougned Odor drew a two-out walk, putting the tying runs on base. Betances put out that fire by striking out Shin-Soo Choo, holding the lead. Teixeira pushed the lead back to four with a two-run homer in the eighth against Neal Cotts, his team-high 18th of the season.
