Yap Congressmen Attended Grand Opening Ceremony For Gilman Sports And Recreational Facility [Yap Congressional Delegation Office Release] – On Saturday, August 10, 2013, Chief James Limar of Gilman Municipality, and the youth and members of the Gilman community hosted a Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening Ceremony for the Gilman Sports and Recreational facility. The two Members from Yap to the 18th FSM Congress - Congressman Joseph J. Urusemal and Congressman Isaac V. Figir - participated in this grand opening ceremony. A number of Yap State officials, including Governor Sebastian Anefal; Senator Joseph Giliko of the 8th Yap State Legislature; and Chief Cyril Yinnifel and Chief Justin Yilibuwag of the Council of Pilung, were also in attendance to witness the ceremony. Representatives of various State government agencies including the Yap Sports Council and Office of Planning and Budget also participated in the ceremony. Other distinguished guests including Father Moses of the Yap Catholic Mission, Mr. Daniel Palik of United Airlines, and members of neighboring communities were also in attendance. During the ceremony, the community of Gilman municipality expressed their sincere appreciation to the governments of the FSM and Yap State, and everyone who was involved in contributing to the completion of the facility. The Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Yap Sports Council, Mr. Liyon Sulog, also thanked the FSM and State governments for funding and providing the relevant services that promote sports development in the State. He further encouraged the community members, especially the youth of Gilman, to utilize the facility, as it could be used for different sports, to train and prepare for future sport programs in the State, the nation, and the region. In the same vein, Congressman Figir in his remark also encouraged the community, especially the youth, to utilize the facility to its fullest potential, and to upkeep the facility for future generations. He complimented on the close proximity of the facility to the Gilman Elementary School, and encouraged the youth to train both body and mind – to be active and enthusiastic in sports, but to also be vigorous and passionate in their educational endeavors. Congressman Figir also expressed gratitude to the people of Gilman for seeing the project through and for hosting the event. A blessing of the event and the facility by Father Moses followed the remarks. After which a loud and roaring countdown from the attending crowd escalated as Congressman Urusemal, Chief Limar, and Senator Giliko lines up for the ribbon cutting. After slicing the green ribbon, the crowd continued to cheer on as Congressman Urusemal attempted the first basketball shot to officially open the basketball court and facility for use. The Gilman sports and recreational facility, one of the last youth sports facility in Yap to be funded by Congressional funds, was initially funded under Public Law 16-49 [C.D.4] where a $50,000 appropriation from the 16th FSM Congress was given to the State of Yap to assist with this community project.
