Yeah, mental health issues have been waiting to be addressed for years. The Santa Barbara killer had been in psychological treatment since he was 8. Im sure in some of that time, some of his issues were addressed -- were they solved? Apparently not. What that predictable? Who knows? If were serious about preventing the most prominent kind of mass killing in this country, we have to address guns. And it is going to take extreme action. Guns may not kill people, but they do make it easier to kill more people, and at a distance, as well. Do we really want to stop this? Then, yes, by all means, expand mental health care -- even restoring it to pre-Reagan levels of spending would be a great start. Now that we have professional armed forces, a well-regulated militia isnt as necessary for our free state, so we should consider abolishing or drastically re-phrasing the Second Amendment. Other things will help as well, such as achieving full employment and fighting income inequality. But well have to take it out of the hands and influence of politicians entirely, because they will only turn it into policies for getting votes, lobbyist money, and political points. I have no idea how we do that. Also, 44 of the people involved in the 70 mass shootings in the US since Tucson where white males. Most of them felt they were somehow being denied something that they should have been entitled to have. Addressing that sense of entitlement might be a good thing to address as well. I posted essentially this on a friends wall about this weeks mass shooting (do you find that phrase as chilling as I do?) and thought Id share it more generally.
