“Year in Review” – New Tone Woods (Con’t) Another wonderful addition this year to the Harp Guitar lineup is Bocote from Mexico. I had been told to give this material a try as a rosewood substitute and I’m glad I did; it’s wonderful! Bocote is about the closest substitute for Cocobolo that Ive seen thus far. It has many positives for Fanned Fret – Harp Guitar construction…. To start off, it’s beautiful! It takes a good finish and high gloss polish. It also glues well and is stable like Mahogany. It is from the same family as Ziricote with similar tonal properties but much more affordable and plentiful. The balance between the guitar and bass are perfect, smooth and lush and the break in time is rather quick. The grain is simply wild; like Cocobolo with “eyes” that are not knots, but part of the grain pattern. When finished, there are flashes of purples, greens, oranges and other colors of the rainbow depending on how the wood is angled in the sunlight. If you like Rocky Road ice cream… this is your tone wood! : ) The cons? I can only find one…. It’s heavy. Bocote is heavier than most rosewoods however, this can also help with its sustain. Bocote will be a standard in-stock tone wood for 2015. Contact me and let’s build a beautiful Bocote Fanned Fret – Harp Guitar for you this next year! jaybuckey
