Years ago, I had very frequently appreciated the magic of the 20 rep squat and the amazing benefits that such a brutal exercise for such torturous reps could bring to my body. In fact, I became quite good at it: as a totally natural athlete, weighing about 13 stones, I once squatted 150kg for 20 deep reps. Thats not going to trouble the big boys, but how many guys do you see in ANY gym squatting that kind of weight for that number of reps? You dont really, because its so BLOODY hard!!! Admittedly, I could only do 1 set, and after it, I basically couldnt move for at least 10 minutes, and I think all I could do was a few sets of leg extensions, then finished the workout! The point Im trying to make is that, quite often, we miss the point entirely and dont really appreciate what is needed to build the foundation of big legs! Admittedly, I have also got caught up in only doing reps up to about 12 reps on every exercise recently on legs, simply because you always think that you have to go mega heavy to build legs. However, if you combine heavy weights with high reps for legs, then you are talking a completely different ball game. This morning, I worked up to using nearly 400kg on the leg press for 20 reps and it felt like a life or death effort. I did the same on hacks and lunges and my quads were blown to bits!! Oh, and I felt very sick. This style of training is not for everyone, and most people would actually prefer to go slightly heavier and stop at about 8 reps, because this sort of high rep, heavy leg work really tests you as to how much you want it. So, if you want to build your legs, hit them hard and heavy BUT FOR HIGH REPS! They will then be forced to grow!
