Years ago I was privileged to hear David Oistrakh and Frieda Bauer play this masterpiece live at New Yorks Hunter College Assembly Hall. Sitting in the balcony, I gazed down at the stage, filled to the brim with extra seats and audience. The sound (and what was INSIDE the sound) was unbelievable. Qualities of nobility, passion, mystery, and grandeur were in abundance. It seemed as if the angels had come down from heaven for the occasion. This performance has been indelibly seared upon my consciousness forever! David Oistrakh, violinist and Frieda Bauer, pianist play Fantasia in C, Op. 159 (D. 934) by Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828) (Part 2) This masterpiece, the Schubert Fantasia in C, Op. 159 (D. 934), was written in 1827, the same year as the two piano trios and the song cycle, Die Winterreise. It was composed for the very young Czech violinist Josef Slawjk and the pianist C.M. von Bocklet. In 1826 Schubert also wrote the Rondo Brilliant, Op. 70 for them.
