Years ago when I was 18 I rescued a dog off the m6 motorway in Cumbria. It was running full pelt in the second lane and it was pouring with rain and other cars were driving round. I do not recommend it because it is very easy to cause a major accident on the motorway but I used my car to shepherd the dog in to the hard shoulder. Unfortunately the dog at the last minute slipped behind my car and back in to the motorway. Lorries were approaching in my mirror so I drove along side and opened my drivers door - I looked at the dog said come on then and tapped my lap and to my shock the galloping dog leapt on to my lap as I drove. I went in the hard shoulder and held the soaking, shaking dog for some time telling her she was all right now. She was bleeding from several puncture wounds. I drove her to the vet once calm and having moved her to the passenger seat - she was loving my embrace.... the vet was angry at first because it was Sunday and I was very lucky it was stock taking day but when he saw the dog his heart softened. I said if no-one claimed the dog I would have her and pay for all treatment. A family did claim the dog and rang later to say how grateful they were that the dog had escaped from a field that sided on the motorway. Turns out the dog was a lurcher. It was 19 years until the day I would own my first lurcher and understand it all... the dogs readiness for human comfort, trust and how it had came to be there. The World works in mysterious ways. The best day of my life that day. And now it all falls in to place. Sorry long story - in my mind and thought why not tell folk who would care and get it. xxx
