Gardai to knock on all inner city doors Gardai will begin knocking on every door in Dublins north inner-city from March 30 in an attempt to reduce crime, while a major crackdown on drug dealing is to get underway ahead of St Patricks Day. No police force in the world has ever gone to this level of policing, Minister Joe Costello and local TD told the Herald. Called Small Area Policing (SAP) 150 community gardai will be allocated a list of streets each and they will then call into every residence with a questionnaire about their areas. Over 60,000 homes will be visited by members of the gardai. Its a radical initiative, said Mr Costello and independent councillor Nial Ring said the overall aim is that the gardai know everyone and crime is reduced as a result. It was agreed that the initiative would be rolled out by March 30 at Mondays Joint Policing Committee, the last meeting before the local elections in May. The idea is to reduce policing down to its basic level of the garda on the beat, it gets the gardai out there, it builds up trust with the community and more crime will be reported as a result, explained Mr Ring. The new plan is the result of four years of work and was headed by Store Street stations Chief Superintendent Pat Leahy. Also discussed at the committee meeting, which was attended by a number of local representatives and gardai, was the major crackdown, under Operation Spire, on drug dealing in the city centre.
