FORMER Australian of the year Patrick McGorry is pushing for mental health to be afforded a greater share of public funding, arguing the benefits would flow beyond the patient and help boost the nation’s productivity. Highlighting the level of awareness and funding for cancer and cardiovascular disease, Professor McGorry said mental health received only 6-7 per cent of Australia’s combined health budget but was responsible for about 13 per cent of the cost burden — an estimated $29 billion a year.
