Yes Scotland has welcomed the publication of a new survey revealing that more than two-thirds of North Sea oil and gas workers plan to vote Yes in the September referendum. It comes on a day when the Prime Minister David Cameron and his Westminster Cabinet jetted into the oil capital Aberdeen to try to talk down an independent Scotland. This survey, of more than 1,000 North Sea oil and gas workers, has found that 70% will back independence in the referendum. It has been carried out by Oilandgaspeople, an oil and gas industry job site. - Survey of more than 1,000 North Sea oil and gas workers, 70% will back Yes - The people in the industry are refusing to be spooked by the scare stories - Workers in the North Sea oil and gas industry want an independent Scotland Kevin Forbes, Chief Executive of the website, said: “The survey today has found that the workers in the North Sea oil and gas industry want an independent Scotland. They clearly don’t believe the concerns over the need for Scotland to have its own independent currency that George Osborne has been setting out. “However, the survey also found that while the workers are keen on independence, many still believe that many issues need to be prioritized in order to effectively safeguard the future of the industry.” Yes Scotland Chief Executive Blair Jenkins said: “The North Sea industry is, and will be for decades to come, a significant part of Scotland’s economy. “It appears from this survey that the people most involved in the industry – who have a key insight into how it operates, and the most at stake in its long-term future - are refusing to be spooked by the scare stories emanating constantly from the No camp, whether about the duration of oil reserves or the pound in an independent Scotland.” This is the latest in a flurry of polls over the last few days. An analysis of polls conducted over January and February shows that, excluding those who have yet to make up their minds, average support for Yes stands currently at 43%. Given that the gap between Yes and No continues to narrow we are confident that momentum will continue and we will deliver a majority vote for Yes in September. “Looking at all the polls, the gap has narrowed by 10 points since last November – a significant move towards Yes and a clear indicator of the direction of travel,” said Mr Jenkins. “An ICM poll at the weekend showed very clearly that that we are winning the arguments and with more than six months to go before the referendum we believe increasing numbers of people will move to Yes as we continue to make the positive case for independence.” “There are very clear benefits of a Yes vote for people in the North of Scotland – they will have a quarter of MSPs in an independent Scottish Parliament, compared to just 1% of Westminster parliamentarians.”
