Yes environmental issues def shape ones perception of themselves and expose them (the inhabitants) to pressures and programming that those from the outside can only theoritize or speculate upon. Either way, there is no way for them to understand what is truly going on. The ghetto is just an far-out romanticized idea for them. The daily dose of normalized PAIN, suffering and unhappiness is unappreciated and too abstract a concept for many to internalize.
