Yesterday, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, co-Chair of the Great Lakes Task Force and Buffalo District Commander Lt. Col. Karl D. Jansen, accompanied Buffalo District Operations Branch Chief Josh Feldmann, addressed a gathering of media and stakeholders to kick off the dredging of Irondequoit Bay, a harbor of refuge. The bay also supports eight charter fishing businesses and a marina. “The Buffalo District serves 38,000 square miles from Massena to the Indiana state line in the west,” said Jansen. “Our 2014 dredging program is an ambitious one, supporting 16 commercial and recreational harbors in the Lower Great Lakes. Thanks to congressional action, Irondequoit Bay is being dredged using a combination of Hurricane Sandy funds and appropriations from the Energy and Water Development Act. This combination allows us to double the quantity we are able to dredge this year and thereby provide a viable channel for harbor users.” Jansen, Feldmann and Strategic Planner Roger Burch also took time to visit nearby Braddock Bay, site of a project to restore a coastal wetland and barrier beach.
