Yesterday, I experienced llama wrangling. A neighbor told us they had a llama in their yard and wondered if it was ours. Lee was out fishing. I woke up Cassie, gathered Nataleena and we headed to the barn to gather halters and found a gate knocked down. I fixed the gate and reinforced it with rope. We then went to our back hillside to catch the first llama Coco. She ran back and forth and then headed into the forest where she entered the corale through a second escape route where they had knocked down the fence. More rope and that escape route was secured. Then we hiked up Myrtle Terrace Lane, amazed at how far Summer had wandered. Usually they stay close by. Summer kept running away from us and dogs did not help as they chased her rapidly up the hill. I thought we were safe with a dead end road but the llama crossed a large yard and found the road heading to the highway. I called 911 to let them know of the potential danger but as I was talking to them on the phone, I found Summer in a yard and she ran past me to go back up the road. Crisis averted, I told the 911 operator we were OK but she demanded my name for the next time the llamas got loose (apparently they got multiple phone calls). Now Summer was trapped between me and the girls. We slowly approached her but then she tried to run past the girls. Cassie grabbed her by the neck and was being dragged up the road. She then wrapped her other arm around a nearby fencepost but her grip was slipping. Nataleena grabbed the llama but I was too far away to get a hold before the llama overpowered the girls and ran up the hill. Nataleena kept up with the llama as Cassie dealt with an asthma attack and I dealt with being old and deconditioned after two hours of chasing a llama. We finally surrounded her in a small yard and she trapped herself behind a pile of firewood. Nataleena used a piece of wood to trap the llama on her side, I just used my big body and arms. Cassie once again ran in and grabbed the llama by the neck and with her other hand got the halter on. We then started to lead her down the road but she then decided she did not want to go and dug her hoofs into the gravel. I pushed her hind end with Cassie pulling but the ears went down and I did not want to be kicked. We both tried to pull her but a llama that does not want to move cannot be budged. Nataleena headed to the house to wash off the poison oak she had waded through. I headed to get the car and some entertainment, food and camp chairs to keep us occupied until the llama decided to move. AS I was packing the car, I saw Cassie leading the llama to the barn. Guess Summer got bored after only ten minutes. Attacking turkeys helped us motivate her through the gate. So apologies to all my neighbors who I trespassed through their property, your welcome to all my neighbors whose lawns got a free mowing by llama and my sympathy to Cassie who is now extremely sore from our adventures.
