Yesterday I found a Morning dove sitting on the ground at the base of a Palm tree in a neighbors yard. As I approached, she flew away exposing a fledgling, the nest and a broken egg laid beside them. I got some gloves and put the fledgling back in the nest, but put the nest in a planter, thinking the mama had seen me. Although keeping a watchful eye from the next door neighbors roof, she didnt see me. I tried coaxing her over, picked up nest and showed it to her. She finally flew over and alit on the roof above the nest. I watched from a distance, off and on, she stayed above it but never flew down. Wind and rain started to kick up so I waited a while to check on her, she hadnt left and the nest and fledgling were in tack, dry under an eve where Id put it. The Bear grabbed one of our ladders and helped me get the nest and baby back into the Palm. All the while making sure she, the mama, saw what was happening. She flew off to a neighbors tree 100 feet away and perched where she could still watch her baby. Placed nest in tree and waited. She wouldnt leave the other tree and remained vigilant watching the Palm for a very long time. It was getting dark by now so I had to let Mother Nature take its course. I prayed shed go back so I wouldnt have to raise a Morning Dove. This morning, walking the dogs, I checked on her, no sign. Discouraged, I walked the dogs back home, grabbed another cup of coffee and set out to see if she was around. When I went back, there she stood on a trimmed fron, perched a few inches from her baby. I smiled with relief, left for a moment and realized I needed to be sure she roosted, otherwise Id be bummed. I walked back again, and there she sat, proud and happy mama. Life is good! Ill try to upload the pics, fb or my phone is preventing some single shots and multiple shot uploads for some reason, but Ill try, because they are cool.
