Yesterday I introduced my dog Momma into the discourse and for those that new her no further description is necessary. A brief description for those that did not know her would be a Labrador retriever stuffed into the body of a beagle. She weighed in over 50 pounds ,so when people saw her I would say that she had my genes. If you have seen pictures of me you would know why. Actually I think she somehow had the genes of my father’s dog. There was no relation but a remarkable resemblance. My Fathers dog was named Duchess and was a mongrel but had a striking resemblance to a beagle. I really had no relationship with that dog because she was acquired after I went in the service to satisfy my little sister who was 14 years my junior. After I came out of the service I was rarely home so I always felt she was more of a nuisance than a friend. My father loved that dog ,and just to illustrate his love I must share this moment with you. We were at the dinner table and corn on the cob was part of the dinner. After we had all finished ,and of course Duchess was right by the table the whole time, there was an ear of corn left. Imagine this, my father taking the ear of corn and holding it in Duchess’s mouth and twirling it as she cleaned off each part of the cob. My father was a very gentle ,loving and kind man, but even for him this was over the top. I never could understand the feelings that my father had for this dog because I had never bonded with her. I did understand later in life what my father felt after Momma came in my life. So you must be saying “ Joe why are you telling us about your dogs”. The lesson here is not about dogs, but how we never know what other people feel unless we are in their shoes. So often we make rash judgements about people without understanding their situation. When you see a person in distress or in a bad situation do not assume that it was their fault. Sometimes that random act of kindness can go a long way to rectify the situation. When in doubt just remember Momma
