Yesterday I visited the Lake Victoria Primary School in Entebbe to see how our work in early grade literacy is going and to highlight the USAID School Health and Reading Program’s work. We know that helping children to learn to read and write is critical to their long term educational success -- and their ability to contribute to the nations future. The fact that Ugandans speak 40+ local languages, and that many of these languages do not have a standardized writing systems, complicates the education process. To help, the USAID program is developing reading curricula in 12 local languages plus English and are contributing 400,000 library books for early grade readers. During my visit yesterday I read the book, “How Dog Came to Live with People,” an African folktale, to the children. I think they loved the story and I enjoyed sharing it with them. If even one child was encouraged today to have the life long love of reading that has so enriched my own life I will consider my day a success!
