Yesterday I was talking to my little girl about an experience I had when I was about 9 years old. I had the opportunity to stay with my grandmother in Guatemala for about a year so I could re-learn my Spanish. The school year had already started but my grandma enrolled me into a local school anyway. Some of my favorite memories as a child came from going to that school. As the new kid Im sure other children didnt know what to expect. I remember watching kids playing tag and one child would ask another Can I play? Many times, the child that had organized the game of tag would say no. At one point, when I saw this happen, I approached the kid who had been told no and asked if she wanted to play tag with me instead. She immediately said yes! But i decided to do things differently, no one was denied the privilege of playing with us. When kids would come to me asking if they could also play, my answer was always YES! Within minutes, I had the whole school of about 450 children playing with each other. I never thought of how important this lesson would be for my daughter. I told her when others tell you that you cant play with them, start your own game. Thats how Ive always lived my life :)
