Yesterday I was walking around the building when school was - TopicsExpress

Yesterday I was walking around the building when school was dismissed and I ran into two students observing the garden. One student was a first grader. He was amazed of how long the vines of the squash had gotten. He then ran to a flower and gently held it to his nose and said “Ahhhhh, this smells so good”. The other student ran to see if her potato plant was growing. She knew exactly where to find it even though she had planted it last year. She was happy and pointed her potato plant to me. Then she looked at the sunflower and saw how tall it was. She replied, “I can’t believe how tall a sunflower can grow. It is taller than me“. I laughed because it was double her size. This might seem like a simple experience for some. For me I saw students using observation skills and taking ownership of something they helped make happen at Brookwood. The students also remembered what they had learned about respecting the garden. That was obvious because of how they walked on the path and how they handled the plants. Amazing things are happening at Brookwood. Students are getting the best education and the best experiences. I just wanted to share why I smiled yesterday. I enjoyed watching the experience of two children inquire about a school garden.
