Yesterday I went out to these ponds that I know have stunning koi in them to hopefully land my first one! There are three ponds in walking distance that I was really focusing on. I first arrive at the biggest pond. I cast out my rods and walk the pond looking for one of my target koi in here, but nothing. After giving the spot a proper try I wasnt able to spot my target. So I move to the pond that I caught my fully scaled fan-tail ghost carp out of. I see the only koi in that pond and what was surprising is that the koi was surface feeding. This koi barley feeds but now he is surface feeding, I have never seen this one do this before! So I change rigs and decide to free-line a piece of bread. I make a couple cast to him and by now my bread is starting to sink alittle, which is good. Suddenly a common moves in along with the koi. The koi moves towards my bread but the common beats him to it. My line starts to get some twitches so I set up into the common. He just explodes off and starts moving towards the middle of the pond. Finally I land him. He is around 10lbs, and I am very proud of myself because of how I was able to catch him. After I released the common, some people show up and put a remote control boat on the water and just start going all over the pond. I was mad, now the koi is gone and stops surface feeding. That is when I moved across the street to a golf course pond. I am not sure if you are allowed to fish it put I figured it would be worth the reward if I did catch something, and it was! When I first arrive there I see a koi just sitting at the top. So tie on a hair rig with just two pieces of corn on the hair. One being a fake pop up piece of corn and the other being real. I drop my rig just feet off the shore and I get the koi back in the area, the one I saw at the top. I am watching him swim around and feeding a little on my bait. After about 5 minutes another koi moves in. This one is a fan-tail and what looked to be white as well. They are both feeding but sparingly. So I place another rod to the left of my first rod. Hy heart stops beating because the fan-tail koi is breaking the water with his fins and is literally on top of my rig. But nothing happens. A couple minutes go by of just watching both the koi feeding on my rods and just feet away from me. I was watching the fan-tail feed some more and sticking his fins out again then all of the sudden my left rod rips off and I see a white flash go into the middle of the pond right by some golfers and they started watching me. After agonising minutes of having the koi swimming all over the place, I am able to bring him in a little but just jolts off again. I finally bring him to the net. My arms and legs feel like wet noodles. My very first koi weighed 7lbs 14oz! If you look at the first pictures in the bottom left hand corner you can see my rods, and that is the fan-tail koi on top of my rig feeding! I had a fantastic day and couldnt have been more happy!
