Yesterday Mike Allen of Politico, added to the speculation that Meet The Press David Gregory was about to be ousted from his position. According to Allen who contends NBCs Chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd is likely to take over Gregorys Sunday job. According to reports in the NY Daily News. Gregory is telling friends he’s “devastated by the report.According to Allen, the change is expected to be announced in the coming weeks as part of NBC News President Deborah Turnesss plan to restore passion and buzz to the formerly number one Sunday news show. Meet the Press has been in decline since Gregory took over after the death of Tim Russert. Allens sources warned him that nothing is a done deal and no final decision has been made.Apparently despite months of speculation that he was on his way out, Gregory was shocked and devastated by the news. “He is absolutely devastated. David is ambitious and is embarrassed” to have learned of his ouster unofficially, our source says. “He’s always aimed up. At one point in his career, he wanted Matt Lauer’s job on “Today” and almost got it. He plays the game and is politically savvy when it comes to advancing himself. This is a major setback for him.” Our insider explains that Gregory was in denial for some time about his days at the show being numbered, and continued to believe he would survive as host — even after a barrage of bad press and a ratings failure. “He dealt with all the right people, he just sucked at that particular job,” says our source. “When you have power he’s your best friend, otherwise he’s gone. He’s calculating, and it backfired.”While I agree that Gregorys version of Meet the Press was totally unwatchable, I still feel bad that he is distressed. As someone who has been let go 4x during his career twice after winning industry awards I understand how Gregory feels.
