Yesterday, My Ride (a paratransport service operated by Greater New Haven Transit District for PWDs) stranded my 81-year-old friend & neighbor Helen and 75-year-old me at Jimmies West Haven restaurant. We were supposed to be picked up at 3pm from the museum (that closes at 4pm). We had to take refuge from the cold wind at Jimmies. Many calls to remind GNHTD that we had been forgotten drained my cellphone battery. Restaurant patrons and staff were appalled, expressed disgust with how we were being treated, and tried to help us remain calm, even bringing us tea and coffee--and even used their cellphones to call key administrators (I have their cellphone numbers), who of course went home at five. The driver originally dispatched to pick us up failed to show up; My Rides system failed to detect we had not been taken home. Wew were totally forgotten!!!!! Eventually my demands resulted in a different driver being dispatched to pick us up. We arrived home exhausted at nearly 7pm! We had waited four hours. Four #*&%#! hours. We both now fear riding again with My Ride for dining, entertainment, arts, museums, concerts, or other intellectual stimulation. Of course I will be filing complaints to CONNDOT, DPH, DSS, P&A, CHRO, my legislators et al. At 5am today I finished my first commentary for media--entitled DUMB & Dangerous: GNHTD’s “New” System.
