Yesterday, October 21, 2014, the Stark County Political Report posted a blog concerning the denial of a commission by the appointed sheriff to Sgt. Major Dan Altieri, a veteran and decorated war hero . Several people have asked us to explain why Sgt. Major Altieri needed a law enforcement commission from the Stark County Sheriff’s Office. Once he retired from the Stark County Sheriff’s Office, he accepted a security position with a local College and a condition for this employment was a peace officer commission. Historically, law enforcement retirees in good standing had an easy pathway to become a reserve deputy (unpaid) and this provided the necessary “peace officer commission” that certain jobs required. Sgt. Major Altieri had the commission which had to be “renewed” each time a new sheriff was appointed. Sgt. Major Altieri fully expected to be commissioned once again by the newly appointed sheriff. The swearing in was done in mass and Altieri was not sent an invitation to attend. Thinking that the failure to be invited to the swearing in may have been an oversight, Altieri attended the event and was escorted from the room. He waited to talk to the appointed sheriff only to be told that because of his support of Lou Darrow, the other candidate that the Democrat Party was considering for sheriff, (the man that Altieri had worked under and respected for many years, considers a friend and had a loyalty to) he would not be commissioned even though the appointed sheriff knew that in order to maintain his job at a local college, Sgt. Major Altieri would need to have the commission. This is the treatment that Altieri, a 27-year highly respected veteran of the Stark County Sheriff Department and highly decorated Retired Sgt. Major for the U.S. Marines Corps for 30 years, 10 months, and 14 days received, based solely on party politics and retribution. With everything that Altieri has done for our country, to be treated in this manner in Stark County is disgraceful, unprofessional, and disrespectful to everyone man and woman who has served our country with honor. It was Chief Dordeas honor to commission Dan Altieri so that he could continue his lifes work in law enforcement. This boosted post is paid for by Citizens for Dordea Committee
